Reverse appliqué gives a unique, dimensional look to a quilted piece because the design is made in the background fabric...the negative space…peeking out of the top fabric!
Margaret Willingham welcomes you into the hand journey as she invites you into the multidimensional world of reverse appliqué mixed with appliqué and under-coloring. It’s so easy, and fun to stitch by hand with our 4-step method of trace, baste, snip & stitch. This labor of love is meditative and addicting, a joyous journey taken one stitch at a time.
The Pineapple has historically been a symbol of hospitality and welcome. Be empowered as you make the 12” Crown Pineapple reverse appliqué block from our Hospitality Quilt XVII (50” x 50”). Learn our simple effective under-coloring method for adding an additional color to your reverse appliqué. Then apply our method to layer the block with appliqué for even more texture. Refine your stitching skills to achieve clean 90° inside and outside corners, and sharp inside and outside acute points without the frays with tips and tricks shared by the instructor.
We designed the quilt in yummy, buttery soft, hand-dyed fabrics by Cherrywood Fabrics. Optional fabric workshop Kits of the original Cherrywood Fabrics are available from www.eobquiltdesign.com. The Crown Pineapple block is sure to be a crowning achievement for all who take part in this workshop.
If you want to learn a bit about this technique before the workshop, check out our Tutorials section on the website: Hand Reverse Appliqué tutorial.
Required Kit: Cost is rolled into the Workshop Registration Fee of $75.00 (payable to the Guild) includes the Crown Pineapple pattern piece, “How-to Hand Reverse Applique with Applique & Under-coloring”, “Tips to Successfully Hand Reverse Applique”, “Helpful Blogs & Tutorials” and Tote bag.
There are OPTIONAL FABRIC KITS available.
See below for downloadable Workshop preparation/materials list and Pre-cutting list. It’s essential that you pre-cut as there will not be time in the workshop to do this, so this will help us make best use of our time together. All links open in a new window.

4 inch, bent handled scissor with slightly blunted tips. Allowed by most airlines when you travel.
These scissors are my very favorite when I Trace, Baste, Snip & Stitch. They allow me to trim away the top fabric without worry of cutting the background fabric. The slightly blunted tip means my scissor blade just glides between the top and background fabric layers.
