Hand and Machine reverse applique with and without Applique

Enjoy angels flying on your tree with these quilted ornaments that are fun to make and bust through your stash; Or get one of our curated kits. Plus you get to learn new techniques. Ornament 1 is created with hand or machine reverse applique. Ornament 2 is created with hand or machine reverse applique with added applique.

All directions walk you through in clear step-by-step directions so its great for confident beginners, and so quick and easy to make you’ll want to make lots! Fill your tree and give them away as gifts.

Yardage makes 4-6 Ornaments; 2-3 of each kind. Ornaments 1 & 2 finish at 5 in. x 5 in.

Fabric for Top, Binding & Backing:

  • 1 Fat Quarter - Dark Batik, top and backing fabric - Angel Ornament 1 & 2

  • 1 Fat Quarter - Light Batik, background fabric - Angel Ornament 1 & 2

  • 1 Fat Eighth - Accent batik - Angel Ornament 2: Halo & wings applique

Batting:

  • 4-6 - 5” x 5” squares, Ornament 1 & 2

Hanging Ribbon:

  • 2-3 - 6” White - Ornament 1: Reverse Applique

  • 2-3 - 6” Yellow - Ornament 2: Reverse Applique with Applique

Hand only:

  • No. 7 Sharps needle, basting

  • No. 11 Milliner’s needle, hand stitchinf

  • Thread- 1 spool each of 80 wt. SAME color as top/ applique fabric, hand stitching

  • Thread- 1 spool of 40 wt. CONTRAST color as top/ applique fabric, basting

Machine Only 

  • Thread- 1 spool each of 50 wt. the same color as top/ applique fabric

  • Sewing machine needles- 75/11 or 80/12

  • Open-toed sewing machine foot strongly recommended for machine reverse applique and applique

  • Flexi- Fuse (double sided, paper-backed iron-on fusible):

    • 1/2 yd. x 21”
